Decluttering & Organizing Cords

Updated: May 22, 2023

How I declutter and store my cords...and how to keep them from mating like snakes.

This is a drawer next to my computer. One of the containers is an iPhone box - some of them make great containers!

I love the smiley cord storage next to my computer! I can stick my finger through the eye and mouth to turn it on and off.

I also love the charging station on a side counter in our kitchen - it keeps things from being "everything everywhere all at once."

This is is how I manage ALL cords and straps that are long enough.

While dealing with many 15 foot straps to tie down kayaks as a kayak guide, my boss showed me this while saying...

"This is how you keep the cords from becoming mating snakes."

Here's how to keep your cords (and straps) from mating like snakes...

  1. Grab both ends of the cord

  2. Bring the ends together

  3. Repeat until it's the right length to tie

  4. Tie in a loose knot

Cords mate more like rabbits - it seems like there are always a million of them, doesn't it? And what do they all go to?!

I also occasionally gather ALL my cords together and go through them. Just writing about this inspired me to do that and I put 3 cords in my donation station!

(The donation station is a tip for another day...)

Happy cord organizing-snake wrangling!

I learned a great way of tying up hair tool cords from a housekeeper at a hotel and have done it that way ever since. Now I'll take these tips for all of the other little cords around the house.
